Satellitle Tracking the Great White Shark
About the Project
During 2004, I was part of the team who tracked the great white shark Nicole from South Africa to Australia and back!. The project gave us a great opportunity to get ‘really’ up close and personal with some massive great whites (see the pics) in a custom designed restraining cradle.
Having funds for over 30 satellite transmitters thrown at us to study white shark migrations was an incredible experience, and one the team did not take lightly. When Nicole’s great migration was published in ‘Science’ magazine (along with the many other smaller movement patterns), it was the coolest highlight of my research career.
This discovery was one of the core pieces of evidence used to get white sharks listed on CITES and stop the trade in white shark products!
