Acoustic tracking great white sharks
About the Project
Acoustic telemetry has been the cornerstone of my great white shark research since 2000. By placing acoustic transmitters on sharks in Mossel Bay, we can follow the fine scale movements of great whites in the bay, and we can see where they prefer to hang out, the depths they swim at, how they hunt around Seal Island, and also how often humans potentially encounter sharks. So far we have tracked 17 sharks for over 1000 hours. In 2005, we first witnessed the sharks hunting seals a night time, a previously undocumented event. This finding was the basis of the documentary Sharkville!
